Our program

The Ophthalmology Residency Program at ECU Health Medical Center is committed to training the next generation of skilled, compassionate and confident ophthalmologists. We offer a dynamic and immersive residency experience grounded in the following:

  • A comprehensive clinical education
  • Hands-on surgical training
  • A strong sense of service to the 1.4 million people who make up the diverse communities of eastern North Carolina.

ECU Ophthalmology serves as the tertiary eye-care referral center for the entire ECU Health system.  Residents at ECU Health benefit from rigorous clinical exposure with teaching faculty across all subspecialties of ophthalmology.  Our program is designed around the following assets and priorities:

  • High surgical volumes with early hands-on opportunities
  • Integrating experiences in university and private practice settings
  • One-on-one mentorship with dedicated faculty
  • Robust didactics, journal clubs, wet labs, and a state-of-the-art simulation lab that create a well-rounded training experience.

The centerpiece of our residency program is our resident-run clinic. There, residents actively serve the communities of eastern North Carolina by providing comprehensive eye care with supervision and mentorship. In this setting, residents lead the patient care team with attending supervision, developing diagnostic and surgical decision-making skills.  Continuity-based scheduling enhances the development of the doctor-patient relationship allowing residents to truly take charge of the care of their patients. Diverse pathology from a medically underserved region guarantees a deep, broad experience.  The strong emphasis on community impact ensures our trainees develop a mature perspective on their roles as physicians and surgeons.  This unique model empowers residents to take ownership of their learning while making a meaningful difference in the lives of their patients.
