Graduate medical education is more than training. Here, we are unwavering in our mission to develop the next generation of physician leaders who will improve the health and well-being of eastern North Carolina and beyond.

Located in Greenville, a vibrant and growing cultural hub, ECU Health Medical Center is the heart of ECU Health and the flagship teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. As an academic, tertiary care referral center, we have 974 licensed beds and provide extensive inpatient and outpatient services to more than 1.4 million people across 29 rural counties. On an average day, ECU Health Medical Center admits over 100 patients and cares for more than 300 in our emergency departments alone.

Our system includes the James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital, seven community hospitals, and a wide network of outpatient facilities, home health, hospice, and wellness centers. The ECU Health catchment area is rural, with high rates of chronic conditions and significant social drivers of health challenges. We deliver meaningful care while developing strong clinical skills. Our graduates are highly sought after for faculty positions and leadership roles.

With 35 residency and fellowship programs and growing, we provide robust training in primary care and a broad range of specialties and subspecialties. In addition to hands-on experience at the medical center, trainees can gain valuable exposure to private practice and Federally Qualified Health Centers through rotations in community and rural settings — preparing them to lead and serve wherever they go.
